How to Manage the Stress That Comes with Indie Publishing Success
Indie publishing success can take many forms—whether it's financial stability, creative freedom, or building a loyal audience—but achieving it often brings unexpected challenges and stresses along the way. Three ALLi authors—M.K. Williams, Russell Nohelty, and Tom Evans—have faced these challenges firsthand and offer insights into managing success once it arrives. For some, like Williams, success required recalibrating her goals. Nohelty dealt with the financial unpredictability that came with a larger audience, while Evans found ways to maintain creativity even after achieving major milestones. Their stories reveal that success is rewarding, but managing it effectively is essential for long-term fulfillment. And, as Orna Ross noted in an article about the psychology of success, adopting a growth mindset can be crucial in handling the complexities of success. Read the full blog post here.
Planning for Retirement: Financial Strategies for Indie Authors
Between writing, marketing, and managing everything that comes with self-publishing, thinking about long-term security often gets pushed aside. But as self-employed creatives, indie authors face unique challenges. Unlike traditional jobs with pensions and automatic retirement savings, authors have to take control of their financial future. With income that can be unpredictable, it’s easy to avoid thinking about retirement or unexpected life events like illness or injury. But the longer you wait, the tougher it gets to build a safety net. “As indie authors, we often focus so much on the creative process that we neglect long-term financial planning,” said Orna Ross, director of the Alliance of Independent Authors. “But securing income for retirement or in the face of illness or injury is essential for sustaining a creative life. It’s about protecting our freedom to create—today, tomorrow, and well into the future.” Read the full story here.
Creating Courses from Nonfiction Books
Creating courses from nonfiction books is a growing strategy for authors to expand their reach and impact. Advances in online learning tools and platforms have made it easier for self-publishers to transform their books into engaging educational experiences, generating additional income and fostering deeper connections with readers. At the core of this strategy is the idea that a book can serve as the foundation for a more interactive, dynamic learning experience. Books, by their nature, are limited in how they engage readers—offering a one-way flow of information. By creating a course, authors can facilitate two-way communication, offer personalized feedback, and engage with their audience in a way that a book alone cannot. Read the full report here.
