Making The Most Of The Indie Author Bookstore

Making the Most of the Indie Author Bookstore

If you’re a member of the Alliance of Independent Authors, you must have heard about the Indie Author Bookstore: I know how many reminders I’ve sent out!

And if you’re like me, you may have initially thought, “That sounds nice… I must get around to that.” Let me gently nudge you (again): it is worth your time. I set aside a couple of hours to browse and upload and got all twenty of my books done.

As ALLi’s Bookstore Lead, I’ve been looking through the bookstore almost every day for the past five months, and I’ve come to see it not just as a directory but as a genuinely useful marketing tool. So this post is about using it to your advantage. Here’s how.

Before I get into the how, a quick word on the what. The Indie Author Bookstore is ALLi's curated, indie-only showcase, a space where readers, librarians, and media can browse knowing every single book was written and published by an indie author. That reader and industry-facing side is why the outreach work below, the influencers, the libraries, the magazines, matters as much as it does. One quick note on access: the Bookstore is available to Author and Authorpreneur members. If you're an Associate, this is something to look forward to as you grow into your membership, and if you're not yet a member at all, it's one more reason to join us.

1: Start by Adding Your Books (It Really Matters)

First things first: do make sure your books are listed. The Bookstore is one of the key benefits of being part of ALLi, and it’s something special: a global space dedicated entirely to indie books. You cannot press a button on Amazon or any other major retailer’s platform and ask to see only the indie-authored books. There’s something quite heartening about seeing thousands of self-published titles gathered together across genres. It feels like an important statement: we’re here, and we’re proud of the work we produce.

So add your books. Not just for yourself, but for what it represents, too.

2: A Smaller Store Can Be a Big Opportunity

The Indie Author Bookstore currently has over 6,000 books. From the admin side, I can tell you there are many more thousands still to arrive. But it is not Amazon. And never will be. And because it’s smaller and has an overall focus on indie-authored, your books have a much better chance of being seen. We have implemented:

  • A daily showcase
  • The new release showcase
  • Monthly themed displays (across genres, seasons, formats)

Instead of being one title among millions, you’re part of a focused collection. That visibility is worth having.

So you've published your book. How do you market it?

This Reach More Readers sample will help you get your marketing basics right and reach the right readers for your book.

3: Think Beyond Readers – Think AI Discoverability

At SelfPubCon 2025, Ricardo Fayet of Reedsy made a point that has really stayed with me and heavily informed my 2026 promotional efforts. He spoke about how important it is for your books to exist across multiple platforms: not just for readers, but for search engines and AI tools. In simple terms: the more places your book appears, the more “real” and credible it looks to the AI search. Adding your book to the Indie Author Bookstore strengthens that presence. It’s another signal that your work is out there, visible, and professional.

4: Have a Good Browse (You Might Learn a Lot)

One of the unexpected joys of the bookstore is simply… browsing. We’re all readers, after all. But don’t just scroll: study.

Look at your genre and ask yourself:

  • What do the covers look like?
  • What tone do the blurbs strike?
  • How polished do the listings feel?

A few patterns I’ve noticed after months spent looking through the Bookstore on a daily basis:

  • Thriller and crime covers are wonderfully consistent: bold, clear, very genre-savvy
  • Sci-fi and fantasy authors are producing some truly striking, high-quality designs
  • Poetry could often benefit from more visually arresting imagery
  • Historical fiction (my own area!) is a bit mixed. Some beautiful work, but less cohesion overall

It’s a good way of checking: how does my book sit alongside others?

5: Spot the Awards and Editorial Reviews

You’ll notice some books proudly marked as award-winning.

This is a lovely opportunity to do a bit of detective work: look at award-winning books within your own genre. You know they’re open to indie authors, so which ones look like they might suit your book? I’ve won an award by following this pattern and that was on Amazon, where I had to check if they were open to indies. Awards can open doors and sometimes we simply don’t know which ones are out there until we see them in action.

Same goes for editorial reviews – what reviewers are listed and could they be suitable for your books too?

You've published a book. Now it's time to reach the right readers.

6: Look for Fellow Authors to Connect With

Another benefit of the Indie Author Bookstore: it’s a wonderful place to find your peers. If you spot authors writing in a similar niche or tone, why not reach out?

You could explore:

  • Newsletter swaps one-to-one
  • Shared group promotions (BookFunnel is a great tool for this purpose once you have your group in place)
  • You could even reach out to ask about who designed their cover or did their edits – authors are a kindly bunch at sharing information.

7: Use It as Social Media Inspiration

The bookstore can also be a lovely source of content for your socials. For example, during Indie Author Month (April: #indieauthormonth), you might:

  • Share your bookstore listing
  • Talk about your indie journey
  • Celebrate being part of a wider community

But really, you don’t have to wait for April. Any time you’re speaking about your work, it’s a perfectly natural link to share.

8: Bring It Into the Community

Inside SelfPubConnect, many of us already share and recommend books to one another.

We now use only Indie Author Bookstore links when we do, and it makes a difference.

It keeps us supporting an author-focused platform, and it helps strengthen something that benefits us all.

Bonus! ALLi spends a lot of time promoting the Bookstore – that could be you!

In the past two months I have reached out to over 1,000 Instagram book influencers, followed by 300 on TikTok, 300+ libraries (librarians influence readers’ choices a lot) and 80+ lifestyle magazines who recommend books. And I will be continuing that work, so please make sure you’re benefitting by getting your books uploaded.

The Indie Author Bookstore isn’t trying to be the biggest. What it offers instead is something more meaningful: visibility, connection, and a shared space for indie authors to shine. Used thoughtfully, it can become a part of your marketing plans and also link you to your peers for mutual benefit. ALLi is spreading the word through the industry, to book influencers and readers. Help us do the same. We have something special – let’s use it to help us all.
