Many first-time authors assume book awards are meant for writers further along, perhaps with a backlist, a publishing history, and a shelf of accolades. While an understandable assumption, unfortunately it keeps a lot of excellent first books out of award consideration.
The truth is that awards are actively interested in new authors' voices, and often have categories (or entire award programs) dedicated specifically to shine a light on debut works.
How debut awards work
Some award programs offer a specific category for first novels or first books. Others give a separate distinction for debut work that entrants are considered for automatically, without a second entry or additional fee. Some programs are built entirely around recognizing new authors.
The naming structure varies depending on the award. You'll see debut, first book, first novel, and emerging author used across different programs, and they do not always all mean the same thing. One program may define eligibility by whether this is your first book of any kind, while another considers only if it is your first work of fiction (or nonfiction, accordingly).
Always read eligibility rules closely, since awards vary in their assessment of what is considered a debut work. Authors sometimes rule themselves out based on an assumption about what “debut” means, when the award eligibility defines it differently.
Your work is eligible for standard categories, too
A debut category gives your work an additional place to be considered, and isn't usually a replacement for other relevant, standard categories of the award program.
Your first book is eligible for genre categories, format categories, regional programs, and awards organized around subject matter, exactly like any other book. Some programs will consider a single entry for several distinctions at once, which means one submission can put your book in front of judges for its category and for a debut recognition at the same time.
This applies whether you write fiction or nonfiction. First-time authors often have more award options than they expect.
An early win helps build marketing momentum
While recognition helps a book at any point in its life, earning award status does something special for a first book. One primary benefit is that a debut award can give you a fresh marketing angle for which other books don't qualify.
Future works, and all of your professional author materials, also receive the benefit of your early status as an award-winning author. Award recognition becomes an important part of your author bio and how you introduce your next projects to readers.

Publishing your first book is a milestone you will forever cherish, and there are many book awards that honor that special accomplishment. Recognition builds a foundation for your author career while giving your book the visibility it needs from the very start.
Debut book awards exist because a first book earns celebration as its own achievement. Your debut deserves that recognition.
