Manga has been growing in popularity for many years, and indie authors have been part of that resurgence. This week I was excited to see the launch of a group calling itself the Indie Manga Alliance. It is starting life as a group of five independent US-based publishers but clearly wants to establish itself beyond that.

The website for the group has a form where anyone interested in participating in or keeping abreast of its work can not only register an interest but say what they feel such a group could best do to benefit them. There is a specific category on the form to list yourself as a writer, so they clearly want to hear from all the indie manga writers out there.
A Couch to 5K for Reading
We end the week with a story that tickled my fancy for sitting at the intersection of two of my passions: books and running.
There are two things that, together, have really helped to make running the popular pastime it has become in the past few years. One of them is parkrun. The other is the Couch to 5K program, an eight-week structured course designed to take people from not running at all to being able to run five kilometers (three miles and change) in one go: the distance of a parkrun.
Another habit that is certainly seen as being widely in need of (re)popularizing as a result of our phone-attached lifestyles is reading. Maybe what's needed is a “Couch to 5K for reading,” you might think.
Well, strangely enough, so did author Naomi Alderman. And so she has started a three-track program lasting eight weeks designed to take people from where they are to where they want to be in their reading journey. Whether you want to find a way to read twenty minutes a day, replace phone time with book time, or read the books you would love to but don't know where to start with, there is a track for you.
