With less than two weeks to go until the London Book Fair, our first Self-Publishing Advice Conference of 2019 is just about ready. While we’re preparing the presentations, I thought I’d share the schedule so you can plan your conference attendance.

9am – Facebook Live Welcome

10am – Derek Murphy – Automate Your Author Business to Increase Efficiency and Writing Productivity
Derek Murphy has an MA in Harry Potter and a PhD in Paradise Lost and has been featured on CNN for running writing retreats in medieval castles. His other passion is unearthing productivity hacks. Which is why his presentation will help you focus your time and energy on the right book marketing tactics rather than ones that are doomed to fail. Derek will help you set up an author platform to attract and engages readers on autopilot, so you can sell more books in your sleep.
11am – Roanie Levy – Blockchain Technology for Authors: What It Is and How You Can Leverage It
Roanie Levy is an internationally recognized champion of creator rights and serves as CEO and President of Access Copyright, a collective that distributes millions of dollars annually in licensing royalties to creator and publisher affiliates. Roanie’s going to discuss the pressure authors are under to generate content and the challenges we have trying to receive payment when our work is used. Blockchain technology holds the potential to change this. The session will address Blockchain technology’s potential for creators and introduces an innovative new service (fan-to-fan sale of ebooks) that leverages this technology. Learn what Blockchain is, how it works, and what it means for you.
12noon – Marina Aris – How to Grow Your Author Business: From Self-Publishing to Self-Publisher
Marina Aris is a writer, speaker, creative entrepreneur and the founder of the Brooklyn Writers Project and the Brooklyn Writers Press. She works with writers one-on-one or in small group settings to help them write, publish, market and distribute their work. Marina’s presentation asks you a question: Love writing? Love indie publishing? Well, maybe you should start running your own independent press. In this session, you’ll get an overview of what it takes to start and successfully run your own press. You’ll gain an understanding of the challenges, best practices and benefits of being an indie as well as a framework/workflow for how to manage and streamline book production and finally, an understanding of what successful indie publishers have in common.
1pm – Mark Lefebvre – Go Wide 1: How Authors Can Reach Their Target Market Readers on All Platforms
Mark Leslie Lefebvre is an author, professional speaker and bookseller with more than a quarter of a century of experience in writing, publishing and bookselling. His session will look at global publishing. Publishing wide isn't just about “taking your Amazon strategy and applying it elsewhere.” This session focuses on overall strategies and approaches to help you learn about retailers far beyond the ones that dominate the US. He also looks at the opportunities libraries provide for authors.
2pm – Robin Cutler – Indie Author Bookstores 1: How to Get Your Self-Published Book into Bookstores
Full details of Robin's talk to follow, but as the title shows, this session will be of interest to any author interested in getting their books into bricks-and-mortar stores. More information coming soon.
3pm – Dave Chesson – What is Metadata? Use Keywords and Categories to Improve your Amazon Book Sales
Dave Chesson is the guy behind Kindlepreneur.com, a website devoted to teaching authors about book marketing and the digital world. Dave is also the creator of KDP Rocket, a software that helps authors see what’s really going on in the book market, and thus pick better keywords and categories to help them sell more books. During this session, you’ll learn how to choose the right keywords to get your book seen by shoppers as well as how to select the right categories that help improve sales Improve your rankings so that more customers will click on your book.
4pm – Camille Mofidi Kobo’s European Manager
In this session, authors will learn more about Kobo Writing Life, Rakuten Kobo’s self-publishing platform that enables authors to publish in 190+ countries in four easy steps. They will get the latest updates on Kobo's service, including Kobo's partnership with Walmart in the US, the launch of audiobooks and subscription.
5pm – Bryan Cohen From 2k to 10k: A Case Study in Boosting Backlist Sales
Bryan is the CEO of Best Page Forward as well as co-host of the Sell More Books Show podcast. This year sees Bryan embark on a campaign to take his back-list book earnings from 2k to 10k a month. His presentation will detail his pitfalls and progress as well as letting us into all the lessons he’s learned on his journey to $10,000 per month.
6pm – Dean Wesley Smith – Trusting the Creative Process: How to Write a Novel Without an Outline
Considered one of the most prolific writers working in modern fiction, USA Today bestselling writer, Dean Wesley Smith has published almost two hundred novels in forty years, and hundreds of short stories across many genres. It’s safe to say Dean is a prolific writer. He’s also a huge proponent of writing into the dark. In other words, writing without an outline. In this presentation, Dean delves into creativity, examines the myths that so many authors build up around their own writing and explains how to write fast quality prose.
7pm – Ricardo Fayet – Advanced Facebook Advertising and Marketing Strategies for Authors
Ricardo Fayet is one of the founders of Reedsy, an online marketplace connecting authors with some of the world’s best editors, designers, marketers and website designers. Ricardo will be giving an instructive and insightful look at Facebook advertising. The possibilities for authors on Facebook are now richer than ever. But the competitive space has tightened too — which is why it’s even more important to know the right ways to use the platform. If you want to up your Facebook ads game with established strategies and new ideas, then this workshop is for you.
8pm – Jane Friedman – But What If I'm Literary? Book Marketing for Authors Who Write Outside of Commercial Genres
Jane has over 20 years’ experience of working in the publishing industry. She’s an expert in business strategy for authors and is the co-founder of The Hot Sheet, an essential industry newsletter. Her presentation focuses on business models for authors who don’t want to produce books at a high volume or price competitively. Her session addresses how you can modify the usual indie author marketing advice for a more realistic and successful approach, whether you write novels, short stories, or poetry.
9pm – Kinga Jentetics – Go Wide 2: How to Reach Your Target audience Globally
Kinga Jentetics is the CEO and founder of PublishDrive, a self-publishing platform that distributes ebooks globally to over 400 online stores. She made Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in Media in 2017 and was named one of the Top 100 European Female Founders by The Hundert. Kinga takes the wide publishing model and advances it, taking you through more advanced strategies and tactics for publishing your books globally.
10pm – Jenna Moreci – How Authors Attract Readers and Make Money on YouTube
Jenna Moreci is a Silicon Valley native. With over 150,000 subscribers, she’s also a YouTube sensation. She dominates the AuthorTube community with her straightforward and hilarious writing channel. Her session, of course, focuses on YouTube, one of the most popular media-sharing websites available, yet completely underutilized by authors. It’s no secret why—putting your face on camera is scary—but the overwhelming benefits to setting up an “AuthorTube” channel have many writers summoning their courage and broadcasting their publishing journey for the world to see. Learn how YouTube allows writers to expand their readership exponentially, market their work on a budget, and easily incur multiple forms of income outside of book sales.
11pm – Adam Croft – How to Self-Publish: Growth Mindset for Authors
Adam Croft is one of the most successful independently published authors in the world, demonstrated by more than a million books sold to date. Following his 2015 worldwide bestseller Her Last Tomorrow, Thomas & Mercer, an imprint of Amazon Publishing, bought his psychological thrillers. In this session, Adam discusses why having the right mindset is essential for all self-published authors. He talks about how having a growth mindset was pivotal to his success in the publishing world and how you too can implement the same mindset for success.
12midnight – Joseph Alexander – Grow Your Sales: How Collaboration Helps Authors to Succeed
Joseph Alexander is one of the most prolific writers of modern guitar tuition methods. He has sold over 350,000 books that have educated and inspired a generation of upcoming musicians. 1am – Libbie Hawker – Take Off Your Pants!: How Outlining Can Save Time, Increase Efficiency, and Create a Better Book
Libbie Hawker writes historical and literary fiction featuring complex characters and rich details of time and place.
