Today we are giving the blog floor over to somebody who has worked for years to help indies succeed: Mark Coker, Advisor to ALLi and founder of Smashwords, so he can discuss how you might do it too.
Last Wednesday he dropped in, through the power of Google Hangouts, to give our members a talk on smart self-publishing strategies, the kind of strategies that give your book its best chance of success.
It turned into a mammoth four-hour, two-part presentation, drawing on Mark's extensive experience watching books on the Smashwords website breakout (and bum out).
In this first part, Mark give what he calls “secrets of success” in self-publishing — sixteen of them — that together add up the only sane approach to this sometimes crazy business.
The second part of the presentation, about merchandising your books for the Apple iBook store, will appear here on Tuesday next.
Click here to see/hear the presentation.

I’m looking for book festivals to attend to promote/sell my book. Does anyone know of any coming up on the east coast? Thanks.
Thanks for your comment, Mary. It should work if you click the image (rather than the caption), but as a belt-and-braces strategy, I’ve also just added a separate link beneath the text!
I watched it too … thought it was excellent! I was very pleased to see it here, but unfortunately the link doesn’t seem to work.
I watched it and it was brilliant! It was informative, educational and the best two hours any indie author can spend. It was also a good reason to join Smashwords.
