Some publishers claim to be in the hybrid publishing space when they’re, in fact, service providers or little more than vanity publishers. So, what is hybrid publishing really, and what are the potential upsides and downsides for authors bringing books out under this model? Listen to Anna Featherstone, ALLi’s nonfiction adviser, and Christopher Locke, director of Membership and Member Services for the Independent Book Publishers Association, as they explain what authors need to be aware of when dealing with operators in this space.

About the Host
Anna Featherstone is the Australian Ambassador for the Alliance of Independent Authors, co-founder of Bold Authors, a judge of the Australian Business Book Awards, and a member of the Small Press Network (SPN) and Australian Society of Authors (ASA). She also enjoys writing and presenting workshops, and author talks on entrepreneurial writing and publishing.
I was caused a lot of harm by one of your sponsors (Gatekeeper Press). They charged really high fees for services that were either not needed, rendered, or done properly. They would only offer a solution with signing of an NDA. When I refused I was labeled problematic and they also confiscated over $600 in royalties. ALLi’s watchdog says there was nothing unethical, but I am curious what you might say. I have lost all faith in this organization.
Who is the Australian publisher of business books that is mentioned in this podcast? Thank you.
Hi Simone, it’s Major Street Press, based in Melbourne, VIC.
Simone, I figure you mean the good hybrid publishing company that focuses on business books? And if so, yes, it’s Major Street Press. They do a mix of trad and hybrid and bring out a number of award winning books a year.
