We end the week with a quick tour of mostly technology-related stories, but we have to start in Sweden. Huge congratulations to Han Kang on winning the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature.

As always, the Academy issued a one-sentence statement explaining how the author met the prize’s one criterion: to take literature “in an ideal direction.” This year’s winner was acclaimed “for her intense poetic prose that confronts historical traumas and exposes the fragility of human life.”
AI Innovations and Record-Breaking Investments
It’s been a week filled with AI-related developments. OpenAI made headlines by completing the largest-ever venture capital fundraising round—a staggering $6.6 billion. Squarespace, meanwhile, has been developing its own AI tools to help users create more personalized websites, combining technology with curated taste.
And to round out these technological updates, Adobe believes it has found a way to protect artists from having their work used without permission by AI technology. Adobe’s new content credentials system, which many cover designers rely on, is designed to ensure that the creator’s identity remains embedded in the image file, regardless of any manipulation.
Google’s Showdown with the Department of Justice
Finally, we end with what could mark a significant moment in the tech landscape. Google is in serious trouble with the Department of Justice in the United States. Earlier this year, the company was found to have manipulated its market share by paying for privileged positioning, including payments to companies like Apple to make its search engine their default. Now, the Department of Justice has announced it will seek to break Google up to foster competition in the search space.
Those of you as long in the tooth as I am will remember something similar happening almost thirty years ago, when Microsoft was ordered to break up after it was found to have used its size to force hardware companies to make its web browser the default.
