News Summary: Amazon Expands Kindle Colorsoft Line; WeTransfer Terms Raise AI Concerns

This time last year, Amazon launched the Kindle Colorsoft. It was the first sign in quite some time that the company hadn’t given up on specialist e-readers, and its success at the checkout was one of the more notable stories from last Prime Day.

Now the company has launched a new model in the series. The new addition has a 16GB memory as opposed to the original’s 32GB. The new model will be cheaper, at $249.99. But that’s only $30 cheaper than the higher-memory original. Still, the wider range means more options for people who want to read books where color matters, and it’s good news for those who write graphic novels and comics, for example.

Concerns over WeTransfer’s Terms

Thanks to our very own Kayleigh for pointing me to a story about a tech platform I have never reported on before but use every week. WeTransfer is the go-to site for many of us who need to send large files. In my case, that’s popping my segment of the weekly Self-Publishing News podcast over to Howard.

WeTransfer is in the news in writing circles this week because their new terms and conditions have provoked concern. The Society of Authors has pointed to the new clause 6.3, which states, “You hereby grant us a royalty-free license to use your Content for the purposes of operating, developing, and improving the Service, all in accordance with our Privacy & Cookie Policy.”

Authors Seek Clarification on AI Use

They have, as has been the case in a few instances of umbrage with tech corporations in the recent past, written a letter to WeTransfer. It seeks clarification on two points related to AI: that WeTransfer will not itself use what’s in the files we send to train AI, and that it will not sell or pass on the content of what’s in those files to anyone else to do likewise.
