News Summary: Audible Reports Strong Retention with Immersion Reading; Authors Guild Expands Human Authored Certification

A short while ago, I reported on Audible's new immersion reading initiative. Subsequent to that, Publishing Perspectives had an expansion on the subject that makes it worthy of a revisit. You will recall that Audible now allows people who own e-books and audiobooks of the same title to read and listen at the same time, with features such as highlighting the text of the word currently being narrated.

The Publishing Perspectives piece contains some fascinating insights based on Audible's customer research. The firm claims nine out of ten using the feature feel they retain more of what they read.

There is also a strong indication that its use is welcomed by those learning languages, which opens up possibilities for authors looking to make their work available in multiple markets. Particularly welcome, for example, is the ability to hear how words in other languages are pronounced.

AI in Publishing Conference

On the subject of Publishing Perspectives, they are holding a virtual conference on AI in publishing on March 24 that may be of interest to more than a few of the readers of this column. You can find full details of “AI@media” here. Registration is free.

Human Authored Certification Expands

On the subject of AI, the Authors Guild has announced it is expanding its Human Authored certification. The scheme allows rights holders to submit up to ten titles per year (and includes past titles among that number) for verification to establish they have been written without the use of AI.

It costs $10 per title, and in return authors get to display a badge proclaiming the human origin of their content and a unique identifier number for each title, which can be used across all formats of that title.

So far, the scheme has been open only to Authors Guild members, but the Guild is now expanding it to authors outside its membership.
