News Summary: Judge Rejects $3000 Per Title Settlement Figure in Anthropic Case

As a newbie indie writer in the UK, I remember many forum discussions on what seemed a dry topic back in the innocent days of the late 2000s as we tried to grapple with the logistics of what was still a fairly niche path to pursue. That topic was “Given that we are protected by UK copyright law, why would we need to follow the complicated and expensive (many of us were penniless) process of registering copyright with the US Copyright Office?” This broke down into two practical subquestions: “Is it really practical to imagine that we will sue someone for infringing our copyright?” and “What would it actually gain us?”

News Summary: Anthropic Settlement Raises Concerns for Rights Holders; Mastodon Struggles with Age Verification Laws

The news of a settlement in the Anthropic AI piracy and copyright case came just before I filed the last of last week’s columns. Since then, the dust has had a little chance to settle, and reflections are starting to emerge on what any potential settlement might mean. I found (as ever) Mark Williams’ very detailed analysis highly thought-provoking.

News Summary: U.S. Senate Hearing Tackles AI’s Use of Copyrighted Works

I have reported on what seems like a weekly basis on legal cases around AI and copyright, but this week I want to report on a hearing held in the legislative branch of the U.S. government. Before doing so, being an ignorant Brit, I undertook some brief research on what exactly the status of Senate hearings is—so if nothing else, this has increased my knowledge of how government works across the world (note for U.K. readers: I think it’s a bit like a Select Committee).

Amazon’s TikTok Bid

Amazon’s TikTok Bid Sparks Booksellers’ Opposition; Publishers File Brief Against Meta: Self-Publishing News with Dan Holloway

We end the week with a round-up that begins with a story I seem to have missed when it first broke at the start of April. It’s an interesting and highly relevant twist in the TikTok ownership saga. You will recall that we are currently in a ninety-day extension to the time at which the TikTok ban is scheduled to come into force. The condition for avoiding the ban is that TikTok in the US is sold to a company not based in China and uses a different algorithm from the one the ByteDance-owned company currently operates everywhere it is available.
