Meet the Self-Publishing Advice Center Team

Orna Ross | Managing Editor & ALLi Director

Orna Ross Bio Headshot

Orna Ross aims to inspire people to apply the creative process to everything in life, through her fiction and poetry and her Go Creative! books and blog. She is an indie author, whose bestselling and critically acclaimed novels explore intimate conflict and the ever-present possibility of redemption. Her work for the Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi) has seen her named “one of the 100 most influential people in publishing.” (The Bookseller), a tribute to ALLi’s amazingly dedicated team and talented members. Orna is Irish and like most Irish people a world citizen. She now lives in London. Mostly.

What I love most about ALLi is being in daily connection with such an engaged, talented, forward-thinking group of authors who are changing not only the status of writers within the publishing industry but also, and more importantly, what we read — and how.

Debbie Young – Commissioning Editor & ALLi UK Ambassador

Debbie Young Bio HeadshotDebbie Young joined ALLi in 2012 and has been editing the advice blog since May 2013. She contributes to ALLi’s series of author guidebooks and also writes fiction, self-publishing themed collections of short stories. She is currently working on a series of novels about authors. As ALLi’s UK ambassador, she speaks at author events and literary festivals. She has also founded in her home village the annual Hawkesbury Upton Literature Festival, which features many indie authors.

As part of ALLi, I feel at the cutting edge of the brave new world of self-publishing, in the company of focused, energetic, creative and good-hearted writers across the globe. This is an exciting and inspiring combination that will certainly make me a better writer.

She blogs about her adopted home on her Bodrum Peninsula Travel Guide website, and is an Author-publisher of a Travel Guide Book series, and is currently working on numerous How-to guides aimed at indie authors and travel writers.

Being part of the ALLi team is a fabulous opportunity to use my love of social media and writing to support the creative process. My mission is to spread the word about the high-quality content available to the ALLi community, and foster an environment that helps authors achieve their goals.

John Doppler – Services Watchdog & ALLi US Ambassador

John DopplerJohn Doppler has an insatiable hunger for technology. A seasoned software developer, John’s quarter-century career in the tech industry comprises a smorgasbord of pursuits, including graphic design, game development, internet forensics, and digital publishing. He relishes helping authors turn new opportunities into their bread and butter.

John serves up humor, news, and resources to writers at Words on Words, and has been rumored to write biographies during lunch.

ALLi represents the perfect fusion of knowledge, experience, and a supportive author community. Not one day goes by without useful information being shared among its members; not one day passes without my referring authors to the ALLi blog for answers. It’s an incomparable resource for both novice and expert authors.

David Penny – Technical Manager

David Penny HeadshotDavid Penny returned to writing fiction after a break of almost 40 years during which he built a successful IT company. He is currently working on a 10 book historical mystery series set in Moorish Spain at the end of the 15th Century.

The third Thomas Berrington mystery is due for release in 2016.

Although I was traditionally published at the age of 24, when I returned to writing in my mid-fifties I wanted more freedom and control of my own destiny. I joined ALLi as an organization willing to encourage indie authors, to promote standards and offer help and advice.

Dan Holloway – News Editor

Dan Holloway headshotDan Holloway is a poet, novelist, journalist, editor and performer. Dan loves the writing and research process but comes into his own when given a microphone. He is the rabble rouser in chief of The New Libertines, who have been touring the UK’s festivals and fringes since 2011.

In 2010, he won the international spoken prose show Literary Death Match and competed at the 2016 UK National Poetry Slam Final at the Royal Albert Hall. He also runs the editing and copywriting business Rogue Interrobang, working with academics and non-fiction writers. When Dan’s not doing writing things he runs ultramarathons and appears on cheesy TV game shows.

It is a real honour to have been involved with ALLi since being a panellist at its launch. I love that ALLi is able to support self-publishers of all types, whatever their reason for taking control into their own hands. In a publishing world that struggles time and again to acknowledge and challenge its own homogeneity, ALLi stands for diversity and the fundamental principle that everyone deserves to be heard in their own voice.
